Cyber Bullying

Cyberbullying takes many forms. A U.S. study revealed that one-third of cyberbullying incidents took place via instant messaging, or IM, in which users chat electronically in real time (Finkelhor, Mitchell & Wolak 2000, 23). Close behind were chat room exchanges on the web (32 per cent of incidents) followed by e-mail (19 per cent). Slightly more than three quarters of the youth were logged on at home when the bullying took place.

Examples of Cyberbulling

  1. Sending someone mean or threatening emails, instant messages, or text messages.
  2. Tricking someone into revealing personal or embarrassing information and sending it to others while posing as that person.
  3. Breaking into someone's email or instant message account to send cruel or untrue messages.
  4. Creating web sites to make fun of another person such as a classmate or teacher.
  5. Using web sites to rate peers as pretties, ugliest, etc.
  6. Sending someone mean or threatening emails, instant messages, or text messages
